I put on my shoes and grab my bag. As I open the front door the cold winter air blows in my face. Doing up the buttons on my coat I walk down the steps and make my way to the bus stop. Looking up at the clear, star-filled sky, my thoughts are on the news that the world leaders, assembled in the group of the eight most powerful economies, will be holding their annual summit in Scotland in a few months. The meeting will take place behind closed doors and no real details of what is discussed will ever be made public, despite the fact that their decisions affect many aspects of our lives. With Africa's debt to Western nations growing and an escalating climate crisis, many are calling on the G8 to take responsiblity for the inevitable effects of their policies. But will it really ever come to that?

Sea Shepherd: Gevestigde Orde Op Zee

Het is koud, er staat een strakke wind en als ik door mijn verrekijker kijk, zie ik niets anders dan dichte mist. Op de radar is een schip gesignaleerd en we varen er recht op af door een gevaarlijk gebied vol losse ijsschotsen en met weinig zicht. Ik kijk weer eens door de verrekijker. Alles is grijs. Af en toe komt een ijsschots onze richting op. De kapitein stuurt er moeiteloos omheen. Ik kijk nog eens. "Zien jullie nu al iets?" wordt er geroepen vanaf de brug. Ik blijf geconcentreerd vooruit kijken. De kerstdagen zijn net voorbij en ik sta op de boeg van ons grote zwarte schip, uitgerust met bemanning en het benodigde gereedschap om maar een doel te bereiken: het opsporen en onschadelijk maken van zeven walvisvaarders die in het gebied illegaal opereren. Fishermen Eager to Hide Evidence of Illegal Porpoise Killings

An increasing number of mutilated carcasses of Harbor porpoises, on average 1.50 meters in length, have washed up on beaches in recent months at Texel, an island north east of the Dutch mainland. According to Just van den Broek, Director at the marine protection centre Ecomare, the killings of the animals found in recent months can be attributed to fishing vessels which operated along the Dutch coast over the winter period. Sea Shepherd: One To Defend Them All

I had heard of the Sea Shepherd before. I knew they were renowned and feared at sea for ramming illegal fishing vessels and others exploiting the oceans. That the crew are passionate people and committed to what they do. That they have claimed the sinking of over 10 ships, many of them used to hunt whales, and that they have rammed numerous vessels at sea. They can also claim that no one has been injured in any of their campaigns in the last 30 years and that they have single handedly shut down illegal fishing operations around the world. Zoals de uitvinding van de boekdrukkunst mensen de mogelijkheid gaf informatie te drukken en te verspreiden, heeft internet een vrijheid van informatie losgemaakt die, ondanks pogingen van overheden om het aan banden te leggen, is los gebarsten tot het grootste informatie- en communicatie-medium ooit.
